In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 210%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
In 2022, the average anise, badian, fennel and coriander yield in Ukraine reduced markedly to X tons per ha, which is down by -16.5% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, posted a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 147% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average anise, badian, fennel and coriander yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of anise, badian, fennel and coriander were harvested in Ukraine; waning by -7.8% on the year before. In general, the harvested area showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to anise, badian, fennel and coriander production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Ukraine
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -38.8% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 137% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 73%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main destinations of anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports from Ukraine, with a combined 48% share of total exports. Sri Lanka, Poland, Saudi Arabia, India, the Czech Republic, Romania, Yemen, Thailand, the UK and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +33.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports from Ukraine, comprising 31% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany stood at +3.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+5.3% per year) and Poland (-6.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Anise, Badian, Fennel And Coriander
Imports into Ukraine
In 2022, overseas purchases of anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -53.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Finland (X tons) constituted the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander supplier to Ukraine, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports from Finland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), threefold. Russia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Finland amounted to +3.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+2.0% per year) and Russia (+8.1% per year).
In value terms, Finland ($X), India ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander suppliers to Ukraine, with a combined 65% share of total imports. Lithuania, Russia, Spain, Egypt and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
Lithuania, with a CAGR of +19.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 26% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
