Antibiotic exports from Ukraine surged to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 143%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, antibiotic exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 91%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Moldova (X kg), Poland (X kg) and Germany (X kg) were the main destinations of antibiotic exports from Ukraine, together comprising 32% of total exports. These countries were followed by Slovenia, Latvia, Italy, Uzbekistan and China, which together accounted for a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Latvia (with a CAGR of +282.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for antibiotic exported from Ukraine were Germany ($X), Moldova ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 61% of total exports.

Moldova, with a CAGR of +160.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average antibiotic export price amounted to $X per kg, declining by -16.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price faced a sharp curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 357% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per kg. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per kg), while the average price for exports to Latvia ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+9.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Ukraine

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of antibiotics decreased by -8.9% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, antibiotic imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest antibiotic supplier to Ukraine, accounting for a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, antibiotic imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), more than tenfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +4.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-5.3% per year) and Italy (+36.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of antibiotics to Ukraine, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 5.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +5.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+1.5% per year) and Spain (-9.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average antibiotic import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -8.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
