Apple Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian apple market declined to $X in 2021, shrinking by -9.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of apples production in Ukraine contracted slightly to X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 0.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to apple production attained the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Ukraine

Apple exports from Ukraine skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, increasing by 44% against 2020 figures. In general, exports showed tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 169%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, apple exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 175%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main destinations of apple exports from Ukraine, with a combined 54% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +989.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for apple exported from Ukraine were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Belarus ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 54% share of total exports.

The average apple export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 46% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kazakhstan (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, approx. X tons of apples were imported into Ukraine; growing by 14% against the year before. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 939% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apple imports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a dramatic slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 491% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Poland (X tons) was the main supplier of apple to Ukraine, accounting for a approx. 99% share of total imports.
