Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, artichoke imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 188% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, France (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of artichoke to Ukraine, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, artichoke imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (X kg), with a 4.3% share.

From 2014 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France amounted to +16.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+5.6% per year) and the Netherlands (-6.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest artichoke suppliers to Ukraine were France ($X), Poland ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined 95% share of total imports. The Netherlands and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4.5%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +51.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average artichoke import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a prominent increase from 2014 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% over the last eight-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, artichoke import price increased by +121.1% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+66.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
