Artificial Corundum Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian artificial corundum market shrank sharply to $X in 2021, which is down by -34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, artificial corundum production reduced slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 6.2%. Artificial corundum production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of artificial corundum increased by 28% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, artificial corundum exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of artificial corundum exports from Ukraine, with a combined 48% share of total exports. Poland, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Slovenia, the Netherlands and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +26.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for artificial corundum exported from Ukraine were Italy ($X), Russia ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 46% of total exports. Poland, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Slovenia, the Netherlands and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

Among the main countries of destination, Poland, with a CAGR of +26.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average artificial corundum export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Slovenia ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovenia (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

For the fifth consecutive year, Ukraine recorded growth in purchases abroad of artificial corundum, which increased by 3.5% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 15%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, artificial corundum imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of artificial corundum to Ukraine, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, artificial corundum imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Russia (X tons), with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +16.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+12.5% per year) and Russia (-17.9% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of artificial corundum to Ukraine, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +10.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+8.8% per year) and Russia (-19.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average artificial corundum import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a deep slump. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the price for Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahrain (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
