After six years of growth, the Ukrainian banana and plantain market decreased by -30.8% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption saw a noticeable contraction. Overall, imports showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, banana and plantain imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Ecuador (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of banana and plantain to Ukraine, accounting for a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, banana and plantain imports from Ecuador exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Colombia (X tons), threefold. Costa Rica (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ecuador totaled -5.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Colombia (+18.8% per year) and Costa Rica (+2.4% per year).

In value terms, Ecuador ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bananas and plantains to Ukraine, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Colombia ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Costa Rica, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Ecuador totaled -9.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Colombia (+18.8% per year) and Costa Rica (-1.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average banana and plantain import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 31% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a pronounced slump. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Guatemala ($X per ton) and Panama ($X per ton), while the price for Colombia ($X per ton) and Ecuador ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (-0.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
