Barley Market Size in Ukraine
The Ukrainian barley market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, picking up by 60% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Barley consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Barley Production in Ukraine
In value terms, barley production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
In 2022, the average yield of barley in Ukraine shrank to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -7.7% compared with 2021. In general, the yield indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, barley yield increased by +19.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 29%. The barley yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of barley in Ukraine shrank slightly to X ha, waning by -2% against the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 5%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to barley production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Ukraine
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of barley, when their volume decreased by -60.1% to X tons. Overall, exports showed a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, barley exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 46%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Romania (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of barley exports from Ukraine, together comprising 65% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +154.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), Romania ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for barley exported from Ukraine worldwide, with a combined 61% share of total exports.
Romania, with a CAGR of +148.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average barley export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Jordan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Barley Imports
Imports into Ukraine
In 2022, the amount of barley imported into Ukraine declined notably to X tons, with a decrease of -95.3% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports faced a sharp decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 328% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
In value terms, barley imports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a dramatic decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 282%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of barley to Ukraine, with a 89% share of total imports. Moreover, barley imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Czech Republic (X tons), with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Poland amounted to +132.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-7.6% per year) and the Czech Republic (-22.4% per year).
In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of barley to Ukraine, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Poland totaled +125.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-5.3% per year) and the Czech Republic (-22.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average barley import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 25% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 36% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
