Beer Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian beer market amounted to $X in 2022, growing by 2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of beer decreased by -59% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, beer exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Moldova (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of beer exports from Ukraine, together comprising 70% of total exports. These countries were followed by Israel, Poland, Belarus, Bahrain, Uganda, Germany, Taiwan (Chinese), Georgia, Algeria and Russia, which together accounted for a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +131.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for beer exported from Ukraine were Moldova ($X), China ($X) and Lithuania ($X), with a combined 58% share of total exports. Israel, Bahrain, Poland, Uganda, Taiwan (Chinese), Algeria, Germany, Belarus, Georgia and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

Among the main countries of destination, Bahrain, with a CAGR of +148.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average beer export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 13%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+16.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

After five years of growth, supplies from abroad of beer decreased by -15.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 42%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, beer imports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of beer to Ukraine, accounting for a 33% share of total imports. Moreover, beer imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Czech Republic (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Belgium (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany stood at +12.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+11.9% per year) and Belgium (+2.3% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest beer suppliers to Ukraine, with a combined 62% share of total imports. The UK, Lithuania, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Mexico and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +69.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average beer import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -7.7% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, beer import price decreased by -27.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
