After three years of decline, shipments abroad of butter and dairy spreads increased by 24% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 473% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, butter and dairy spreads exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 675% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Poland (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) were the main destinations of butter and dairy spreads exports from Ukraine, with a combined 69% share of total exports. Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Israel, Lithuania, Georgia and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Israel (with a CAGR of +315.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for butter and dairy spreads exports from Ukraine, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Moldova ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Poland amounted to +253.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (+27.5% per year) and Azerbaijan (+27.4% per year).

In 2022, the average butter and dairy spreads export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 22% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, butter and dairy spreads export price increased by +35.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Lithuania ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Georgia ($X per ton) and Moldova ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Georgia (+17.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Butter And Dairy Spreads
Imports into Ukraine
In 2022, purchases abroad of butter and dairy spreads decreased by -89.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 484% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, butter and dairy spreads imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 344%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of butter and dairy spreads to Ukraine, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, butter and dairy spreads imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), threefold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany totaled +44.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-20.2% per year) and the United States (-34.8% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of butter and dairy spreads to Ukraine, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany stood at +48.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-17.9% per year) and Italy (+29.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average butter and dairy spreads import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 47% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, butter and dairy spreads import price increased by +81.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average import price increased by 52%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
