Cabbage Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian cabbage market reached $X in 2022, increasing by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Cabbage consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 37%. Cabbage production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of cabbage and other brassicas in Ukraine reached X tons per ha in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. The cabbage yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of cabbage and other brassicas production in Ukraine totaled X ha, remaining constant against the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 5.6%. Cabbage exports from Ukraine dropped dramatically to X tons in 2022, reducing by -71.5% compared with the previous year. In general, exports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 135%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 106% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons) was the main destination for cabbage exports from Ukraine, accounting for a 99% share of total exports. It was followed by Moldova (X tons), with a 0.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Belarus stood at +14.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (-19.6% per year) and Russia (-72.3% per year).

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the key foreign market for cabbage and other brassicas exports from Ukraine, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Moldova ($X), with a 0.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Belarus amounted to +23.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (-12.5% per year) and Russia (-70.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cabbage export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 27% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cabbage export price increased by +39.3% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cabbage Imports

Imports into Ukraine

For the fifth consecutive year, Ukraine recorded growth in supplies from abroad of cabbage and other brassicas, which increased by 221% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 264% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, cabbage imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), North Macedonia (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of cabbage imports to Ukraine, together accounting for 82% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +210.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), North Macedonia ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest cabbage suppliers to Ukraine, together comprising 76% of total imports.

Poland, with a CAGR of +215.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average cabbage import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 24% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 36%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Romania ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Moldova ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+40.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
