Cheese Market Size in Ukraine

In 2021, the Ukrainian cheese market increased by 6.6% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. After three years of decline, overseas shipments of cheese increased by 6.5% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a dramatic curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cheese exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Moldova (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the main destinations of cheese exports from Ukraine, together comprising 80% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +375.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Moldova ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the largest markets for cheese exported from Ukraine worldwide, with a combined 83% share of total exports.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +326.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cheese export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, overseas purchases of cheese increased by 16% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 97% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, cheese imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 93% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of cheese imports to Ukraine, with a combined 72% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Italy, Lithuania, Belarus, Iceland, the Czech Republic and Russia, which together accounted for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Iceland (with a CAGR of +76.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cheese suppliers to Ukraine were Poland ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 69% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Italy, Lithuania, Belarus, the Czech Republic, Iceland and Russia, which together accounted for a further 23%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Iceland, with a CAGR of +88.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cheese import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 4.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 11% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
