Cherry Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian cherry market reached $X in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. Cherry consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of cherries in Ukraine expanded modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, picking up by 2.9% compared with 2021. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the yield increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the average cherry yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of cherries production in Ukraine fell to X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area saw a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 3% against the previous year. In 2022, overseas shipments of cherries decreased by 99.9% to X kg, falling for the fourth year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports showed a sharp shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 131%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cherry exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a dramatic shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 338% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Liberia (X kg), Greece (X kg) and Singapore (X kg) were the main destinations of cherry exports from Ukraine, with a combined 78% share of total exports.

From 2014 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Liberia (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for cherry exported from Ukraine were Liberia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Greece ($X), with a combined 79% share of total exports. Panama, Malta and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

Malta, with a CAGR of +23.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cherry export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 439% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted a significant increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malta ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malta (+34.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of cherries, when their volume decreased by -63% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 1,606% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, cherry imports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 1,152%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Moldova (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main suppliers of cherry imports to Ukraine, with a combined 92% share of total imports.

From 2014 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Moldova (with a CAGR of +119.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cherry suppliers to Ukraine were Moldova ($X), Greece ($X) and Turkey ($X), together comprising 91% of total imports.

Moldova, with a CAGR of +196.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average cherry import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a slight increase from 2014 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last eight-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
