The Ukrainian cherry and sour cherry market expanded modestly to $X in 2022, surging by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Production of Cherries and Sour Cherries in Ukraine

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 116%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of cherries and sour cherries in Ukraine fell to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -2.4% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 26%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the average cherry and sour cherry yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of cherries and sour cherries in Ukraine fell to X ha, flattening at 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cherry and sour cherry production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of cherries and sour cherries decreased by -96% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports saw a precipitous descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 114%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a sharp decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 293% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Moldova (X tons) was the main destination for cherry and sour cherry exports from Ukraine, accounting for a approx. 99% share of total exports.

The average cherry and sour cherry export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -17.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 98%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Moldova.

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of cherries and sour cherries, when their volume decreased by -8.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 3,522%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 3,330%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Moldova (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cherry and sour cherry to Ukraine, with a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, cherry and sour cherry imports from Moldova exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Greece (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Turkey (X tons), with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Moldova amounted to +253.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Greece (+5.1% per year) and Turkey (-14.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest cherry and sour cherry suppliers to Ukraine were Moldova ($X), Greece ($X) and Turkey ($X), with a combined 91% share of total imports.

Moldova, with a CAGR of +196.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

The average cherry and sour cherry import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -37.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
