Chestnut Market Size in Ukraine

For the fourth consecutive year, the Ukrainian chestnut market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 3.5% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, saw a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chestnut production reduced modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 29%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the average yield of chestnuts in Ukraine amounted to X tons per ha, leveling off at 2020. Overall, the yield saw a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the yield increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average chestnut yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of chestnut to Ukraine, accounting for a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, chestnut imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold. Russia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.1% share.

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chestnut to Ukraine, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 3.7% share.

From 2014 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy amounted to +221.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+30.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+6.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average chestnut import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 22% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated prominent growth from 2014 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the last seven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, chestnut import price increased by +81.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 26%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+20.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
