Chili And Pepper Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian chili and pepper market was estimated at $X in 2022, flattening at the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. Chili and pepper consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Chili And Pepper Production in Ukraine

In value terms, chili and pepper production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Chili and pepper production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average chili and pepper yield in Ukraine totaled X tons per ha, almost unchanged from 2021. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the average chili and pepper yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The chili and pepper harvested area in Ukraine totaled X ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 3.3% against the previous year. The chili and pepper harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2022, exports of chilies and peppers (green) from Ukraine contracted sharply to X tons, reducing by -98.6% against the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 602%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chili and pepper exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a dramatic setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 471% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Panama (X kg), Liberia (X kg) and Singapore (X kg) were the main destinations of chili and pepper exports from Ukraine, with a combined 30% share of total exports. Georgia, Greece, Marshall Islands, Cyprus, Malta, Turkey, British Virgin Islands, Hong Kong SAR, Moldova and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 53%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Georgia (with a CAGR of +52.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Panama ($X) and Liberia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for chili and pepper exported from Ukraine worldwide, with a combined 35% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Singapore, with a CAGR of +50.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average chili and pepper export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 531% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted resilient growth. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+9.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

After six years of growth, overseas purchases of chilies and peppers (green) decreased by -12.6% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a perceptible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 70%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, chili and pepper imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 80%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of chili and pepper to Ukraine, accounting for a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, chili and pepper imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey totaled +19.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+2.4% per year) and Spain (-9.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest chili and pepper suppliers to Ukraine were Turkey ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined 78% share of total imports. Poland, Moldova, Iran, North Macedonia and Israel lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

In terms of the main suppliers, North Macedonia, with a CAGR of +198.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average chili and pepper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 16%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were the Netherlands ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) and Moldova ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by North Macedonia (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
