For the third consecutive year, the Ukrainian cucumber and gherkin market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 1.5% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Cucumber and gherkin consumption peaked at $X in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In general, the total production indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -8.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average cucumber and gherkin yield in Ukraine declined to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -3.8% against the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the average cucumber and gherkin yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of cucumbers and gherkins were harvested in Ukraine; remaining constant against the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 5.3%. The cucumber and gherkin harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of cucumbers and gherkins, when their volume decreased by -82.7% to X tons. Overall, exports faced a significant decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Poland (X tons) was the main destination for cucumber and gherkin exports from Ukraine, with a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin exports to Poland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Estonia (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Lithuania (X tons), with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Poland totaled +157.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Estonia (+145.6% per year) and Lithuania (+89.0% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the key foreign market for cucumbers and gherkins exports from Ukraine, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Estonia ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 2.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Poland amounted to +155.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Estonia (+97.9% per year) and Lithuania (+75.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cucumber and gherkin export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 60% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate buoyant growth. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2022, supplies from abroad of cucumbers and gherkins increased by 59% to X tons, rising for the seventh year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports showed a prominent increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest cucumber and gherkin supplier to Ukraine, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Romania (X tons), threefold. Poland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey totaled +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Romania (+87.5% per year) and Poland (+39.0% per year).

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Romania ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the largest cucumber and gherkin suppliers to Ukraine, together comprising 95% of total imports.

Romania, with a CAGR of +88.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average cucumber and gherkin import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern.
