Electric Locomotive Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian electric locomotive market reduced to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -13.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a significant increase. In value terms, electric locomotive exports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a sharp descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 170%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Vietnam (X units) and Uzbekistan (X units) were the main destinations of electric locomotive exports from Ukraine. Moreover, electric locomotive exports in Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest exporter, Uzbekistan, twofold.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of -7.4%).

In value terms, Georgia ($X), Latvia ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for electric locomotive exported from Ukraine worldwide, together accounting for 88% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Latvia, with a CAGR of -15.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

The average electric locomotive export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -62.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 65%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Georgia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Latvia (+9.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, purchases abroad of electric locomotives decreased by -81.8% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a precipitous slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 300% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, electric locomotive imports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports faced a dramatic setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 201%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Russia (X units) constituted the largest supplier of electric locomotive to Ukraine, accounting for a approx. 50% share of total imports.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Georgia ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-5.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
