From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, expanded clays exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of expanded clays exports from Ukraine, with a combined 65% share of total exports. Poland, Belarus, the UK, Turkey and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +54.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Belarus, with a CAGR of +56.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In value terms, expanded clays imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 97%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) constituted the largest expanded clays supplier to Ukraine, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, expanded clays imports from Kazakhstan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belarus (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Kazakhstan totaled -1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (-21.6% per year) and Germany (+3.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest expanded clays suppliers to Ukraine were Belarus ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and the UK ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports. Germany, Denmark and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Denmark, with a CAGR of +20.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

The average expanded clays import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -3% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, expanded clays import price increased by +45.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 50%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+17.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
