Filter Paper Market Size in Ukraine

After two years of growth, the Ukrainian filter paper market decreased by -2.6% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a prominent increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of filter paper and paperboard cut to shape, when their volume increased by 10% to X tons. In general, exports showed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 398%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, filter paper exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 132%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Moldova (X tons) was the main destination for filter paper exports from Ukraine, accounting for a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, filter paper exports to Moldova exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belarus (X kg), twofold. The United Arab Emirates (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Moldova totaled +50.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+31.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (0.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for filter paper exported from Ukraine were Moldova ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Belarus ($X), with a combined 77% share of total exports. Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

Among the main countries of destination, South Africa, with a CAGR of +9,320.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average filter paper export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 102%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Africa (+259.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

For the third consecutive year, Ukraine recorded growth in supplies from abroad of filter paper and paperboard cut to shape, which increased by 6.9% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +20.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, filter paper imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 25%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of filter paper to Ukraine, accounting for a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, filter paper imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X tons), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+13.9% per year) and Spain (+110.0% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of filter paper and paperboard cut to shape to Ukraine, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany stood at -3.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+12.3% per year) and Spain (+100.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average filter paper import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 5.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (-1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
