Flax Fiber Market Size in Ukraine

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Ukrainian flax fiber market, when its value decreased by -87.3% to $X. In general, consumption saw a significant decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 40%. Over the period under review, the average flax fiber yield attained the maximum level at X kg per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The flax fiber harvested area in Ukraine expanded remarkably to X ha in 2022, surging by 6.2% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to flax fiber production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the amount of flax fiber exported from Ukraine surged to X tons, rising by 595% compared with the year before. Overall, exports enjoyed a prominent expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Lithuania (X tons) was the main destination for flax fiber exports from Ukraine, accounting for a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, flax fiber exports to Lithuania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Lithuania totaled +53.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-15.7% per year) and Poland (-32.5% per year).

In value terms, Lithuania ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for flax fiber exports from Ukraine, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Lithuania stood at +47.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-20.5% per year) and Poland (-34.4% per year).

The average flax fiber export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 8.6%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2022, overseas purchases of flax fiber decreased by -52.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 138%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, flax fiber imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, France (X tons) constituted the largest flax fiber supplier to Ukraine, accounting for a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, flax fiber imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France stood at +600.5%.

In value terms, France ($X) and Egypt ($X) appeared to be the largest flax fiber suppliers to Ukraine.

The average flax fiber import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 106% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw strong growth. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the price for France stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
