In value terms, fresh fish fillet exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 1,874%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Moldova (X tons) was the main destination for fresh fish fillet exports from Ukraine, with a 91% share of total exports. Moreover, fresh fish fillet exports to Moldova exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Moldova totaled +429.2%.

In value terms, Moldova ($X) remains the key foreign market for fresh or chilled fish fillets exports from Ukraine, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Moldova amounted to +439.7%.

In 2021, the average fresh fish fillet export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 22% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 44% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+5.5%).

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, supplies from abroad of fresh or chilled fish fillets decreased by -5.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 301% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fresh fish fillet imports declined slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 220% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

France (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of fresh fish fillet imports to Ukraine, together comprising 80% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +490.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Turkey ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X) appeared to be the largest fresh fish fillet suppliers to Ukraine, with a combined 78% share of total imports.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +433.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average fresh fish fillet import price amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. In general, import price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, fresh fish fillet import price increased by +165.8% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 83% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iceland ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iceland (+21.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
