The Ukrainian frozen whole fish market expanded sharply to $X in 2021, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 178%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen whole fish exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 159%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Hungary (X tons) was the main destination for frozen whole fish exports from Ukraine, accounting for a 35% share of total exports. Moreover, frozen whole fish exports to Hungary exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hungary totaled +36.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+101.5% per year) and Germany (+97.0% per year).

In value terms, Hungary ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Denmark ($X) were the largest markets for frozen whole fish exported from Ukraine worldwide, with a combined 64% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Israel, Germany, Moldova, Estonia and Bulgaria, which together accounted for a further 29%.

Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +117.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average frozen whole fish export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 132%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belarus (+14.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of frozen whole fish, when their volume increased by 4.2% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen whole fish imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Iceland (X tons), Norway (X tons) and Estonia (X tons) were the main suppliers of frozen whole fish imports to Ukraine, with a combined 45% share of total imports. The United States, the UK, Spain, Canada, Latvia, Faroe Islands and Argentina lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Faroe Islands (with a CAGR of +13.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest frozen whole fish suppliers to Ukraine were Iceland ($X), the United States ($X) and Norway ($X), together comprising 50% of total imports. The UK, Spain, Canada, Faroe Islands, Estonia, Argentina and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

In 2021, the average frozen whole fish import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
