For the fourth consecutive year, the Ukrainian fructose market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -13.7% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption saw a abrupt downturn. Fructose consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of fructose and fructose syrup increased by 2,579% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 32,737% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, fructose exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 14,331%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) was the main destination for fructose exports from Ukraine, with a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, fructose exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), threefold. Colombia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to China stood at +179.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+376.5% per year) and Colombia (0.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for fructose and fructose syrup exports from Ukraine, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to China amounted to +180.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+477.5% per year) and Indonesia (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average fructose export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 108%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Indonesia ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Egypt ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+21.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, imports of fructose and fructose syrup into Ukraine amounted to X tons, with an increase of 3.7% on the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fructose imports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 26%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Bulgaria (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of fructose imports to Ukraine, with a combined 69% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +58,949.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest fructose suppliers to Ukraine were Bulgaria ($X), Turkey ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 44% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +42,000.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average fructose import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
