Garlic Market Size in Ukraine

For the seventh year in a row, the Ukrainian garlic market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 0.5% to $X in 2022. In general, the total consumption indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +64.1% against 2013 indices. Garlic consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Garlic Production in Ukraine

In value terms, garlic production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +76.1% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 24%. Garlic production peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

The average yield of garlic in Ukraine reduced to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -2.7% compared with 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average garlic yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The garlic harvested area in Ukraine rose to X ha in 2022, growing by 2% on the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to garlic production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2022, approx. X tons of garlic were exported from Ukraine; with a decrease of -86.6% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 229% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a notable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 333% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons) was the main destination for garlic exports from Ukraine, accounting for a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, garlic exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), twofold. Poland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Austria totaled +212.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+87.0% per year) and Poland (+81.6% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for garlic exports from Ukraine, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Austria totaled +250.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+96.0% per year) and Poland (+88.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average garlic export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 112% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a prominent expansion. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+24.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2022, approx. X tons of garlic were imported into Ukraine; growing by 27% compared with the year before. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 47%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, garlic imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted resilient growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of garlic to Ukraine, accounting for a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, garlic imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Turkey (X tons), with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled -4.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+13.4% per year) and Turkey (+84.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of garlic to Ukraine, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+16.2% per year) and Turkey (+98.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average garlic import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 32% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.4%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
