Graphite Market Size in Ukraine

In 2021, the Ukrainian graphite market increased by 0.1% to $X, rising for the fourth consecutive year after five years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a slight expansion. Graphite consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Graphite Production in Ukraine

In value terms, graphite production rose to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -1.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 93% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2021, graphite exports from Ukraine declined significantly to X tons, waning by -21.7% against 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, graphite exports declined markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 70% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons) was the main destination for graphite exports from Ukraine, with a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, graphite exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovakia (X tons), fourfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Austria amounted to +9.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+41.0% per year) and Italy (+14.7% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X) remains the key foreign market for graphite exports from Ukraine, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Austria stood at +3.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+33.5% per year) and Belarus (+16.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average graphite export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 7.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 7.9% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovenia (-0.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, overseas purchases of graphite (natural) decreased by -34.8% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports recorded a sharp decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 194% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, graphite imports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports faced a sharp decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Madagascar (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of graphite to Ukraine, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, graphite imports from Madagascar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Madagascar was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-16.4% per year) and Germany (+5.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest graphite suppliers to Ukraine were Madagascar ($X), China ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 97% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Germany, with a CAGR of +7.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average graphite import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, graphite import price decreased by -5.9% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
