Honey Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian honey market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after three years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a deep reduction. Honey consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Honey Production in Ukraine

In value terms, honey production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Honey production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2022, shipments abroad of honey decreased by -20.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, honey exports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of honey exports from Ukraine, together comprising 53% of total exports. The United States, Italy, the Czech Republic, Spain, Belgium, Lithuania, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +286.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and France ($X) were the largest markets for honey exported from Ukraine worldwide, with a combined 53% share of total exports.

France, with a CAGR of +258.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average honey export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, honey export price increased by +66.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 38%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to the United States ($X per ton) and Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

Honey imports into Ukraine skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, jumping by 372% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 608%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, honey imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 354%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the UK (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of honey to Ukraine, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, honey imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the UK was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+11.6% per year) and Italy (0.0% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of honey to Ukraine, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 19% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the UK was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+9.1% per year) and Italy (0.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average honey import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -20.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 32%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
