In 2021, shipments abroad of iron and steel wire increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, iron and steel wire exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a buoyant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Poland (X tons) was the main destination for iron and steel wire exports from Ukraine, with a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, iron and steel wire exports to Poland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), twofold. Belarus (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Poland amounted to +23.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+13.8% per year) and Belarus (-4.3% per year).
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the key foreign market for iron and steel wire exports from Ukraine, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 6.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Poland stood at +26.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+16.8% per year) and Belarus (-3.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average iron and steel wire export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 48% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Italy ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Moldova ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Iron and Steel Wire
Imports into Ukraine
In 2021, the amount of iron and steel wire imported into Ukraine skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 15% against the previous year's figure. In general, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, iron and steel wire imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of iron and steel wire imports to Ukraine, with a combined 51% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Russia, Turkey, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, India and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +21.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Germany ($X) and Belarus ($X) constituted the largest iron and steel wire suppliers to Ukraine, together comprising 45% of total imports. These countries were followed by Turkey, Spain, Russia, Poland, India, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 41%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +17.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average iron and steel wire import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
