Lactose Market Size in Ukraine
The Ukrainian lactose market rose significantly to $X in 2022, picking up by 11% against the previous year. In general, the total production indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -7.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Ukraine
In 2022, shipments abroad of lactose and lactose syrup decreased by -13.5% to X tons, falling for the fifth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a sharp decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lactose exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a precipitous decline. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for lactose exports from Ukraine, with a 88% share of total exports. Moreover, lactose exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X kg), ninefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China totaled -30.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-29.3% per year) and Russia (-60.0% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for lactose and lactose syrup exports from Ukraine, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 6.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China stood at -18.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-44.4% per year) and the United States (-27.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average lactose export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 45% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+39.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lactose Imports
Imports into Ukraine
In 2022, approx. X tons of lactose and lactose syrup were imported into Ukraine; growing by 31% against 2021 figures. In general, imports recorded strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
In value terms, lactose imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +71.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 65%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Lithuania (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of lactose imports to Ukraine, together accounting for 78% of total imports. France, the Netherlands, Slovakia, New Zealand and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +125.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Lithuania ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the largest lactose suppliers to Ukraine, together accounting for 75% of total imports. The Netherlands, France, Slovakia, New Zealand and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.
France, with a CAGR of +117.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average lactose import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -13.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 41% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
