For the third year in a row, the Ukrainian liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 20% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a prominent increase. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, shipments abroad of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) decreased by -76.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports faced a sharp contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a sharp slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exports from Ukraine, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Russia (X tons), with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Czech Republic stood at +5.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+1.7% per year) and Russia (-35.3% per year).
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exports from Ukraine, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 6.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Czech Republic totaled +4.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+11.4% per year) and Hungary (+1.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 25% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 55%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+59.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
Imports into Ukraine
In 2022, overseas purchases of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) decreased by -12.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 75%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) were the main suppliers of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports to Ukraine, together comprising 47% of total imports. Poland, Belarus, the United States, Egypt, Romania, Algeria, Latvia and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +133.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Russia ($X) and Lithuania ($X) were the largest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) suppliers to Ukraine, with a combined 43% share of total imports. Poland, Belarus, the United States, Egypt, Romania, Algeria, Latvia and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.
The United States, with a CAGR of +114.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while the price for Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+37.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
