The Ukrainian lysine market surged to $X in 2022, picking up by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -7.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Lysine Exports
Exports from Ukraine
After three years of growth, shipments abroad of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof decreased by -85.9% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 4,788% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
In value terms, lysine exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 3,761%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted notably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Belgium (X tons), Georgia (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of lysine exports from Ukraine, together comprising 100% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +934.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the key foreign market for lysine and its esters, and salts thereof exports from Ukraine, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Georgia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Belgium stood at +38.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Georgia (+96.1% per year) and the United States (+1,105.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lysine export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a deep slump. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Georgia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+16.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Lysine Imports
Imports into Ukraine
In 2022, purchases abroad of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof increased by 36% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +124.3% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, lysine imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +120.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) was the main lysine supplier to Ukraine, with a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, lysine imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 1.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +20.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+42.8% per year) and Germany (+70.8% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof to Ukraine, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 6.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 1.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +16.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+50.1% per year) and Germany (+67.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lysine import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 16% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
