Maize Market Size in Ukraine

After four years of growth, the Ukrainian maize market decreased by -1.7% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed significant growth. Maize consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Maize Production in Ukraine

In value terms, maize production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 406%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of maize (green) in Ukraine contracted to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -12.1% compared with the previous year. In general, the yield, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 410%. The maize yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The maize harvested area in Ukraine expanded markedly to X ha in 2022, rising by 12% against the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to maize production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2022, overseas shipments of maize (green) decreased by -96.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a sharp slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 503%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, maize exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a significant decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 129%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Estonia (X kg) were the main destinations of maize exports from Ukraine, with a combined 93% share of total exports.

From 2014 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +111.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Belarus ($X) and Estonia ($X) constituted the largest markets for maize exported from Ukraine worldwide, with a combined 80% share of total exports.

Poland, with a CAGR of +115.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average maize export price amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 161% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Estonia (+21.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Maize Imports

Imports into Ukraine

Maize imports into Ukraine declined significantly to X tons in 2022, reducing by -26.6% on 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, maize imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Uzbekistan (X tons) constituted the largest maize supplier to Ukraine, accounting for a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Georgia (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 19% share.

From 2014 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Uzbekistan stood at +33.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Georgia (-7.8% per year) and Italy (+37.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest maize suppliers to Ukraine were Uzbekistan ($X), Italy ($X) and Georgia ($X), together accounting for 84% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Italy, with a CAGR of +47.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average maize import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2014 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last eight years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize import price increased by +74.1% against 2016 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Georgia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
