Maize Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian maize market fell dramatically to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -32.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded moderate growth. Maize consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Maize Production in Ukraine

In value terms, maize production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average maize yield in Ukraine declined to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -13.3% against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the average maize yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of maize were harvested in Ukraine; standing approx. at the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 10% against the previous year. The maize harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2022, shipments abroad of maize was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -22.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 50%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, maize exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

China (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of maize exports from Ukraine, with a combined 43% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +112.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for maize exported from Ukraine were China ($X), Romania ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined 43% share of total exports.

Romania, with a CAGR of +106.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average maize export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 36%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Iran ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iran (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Maize Imports

Imports into Ukraine

In 2022, overseas purchases of maize decreased by -26.8% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports faced a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, maize imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

France (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main suppliers of maize imports to Ukraine, together comprising 71% of total imports. Austria, Germany, Spain, Serbia, the United States and Chile lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +140.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of maize to Ukraine, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from France stood at -1.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+10.0% per year) and Hungary (-17.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average maize import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 13% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize import price increased by +51.1% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
