Millet Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian millet market surged to $X in 2022, rising by 317% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw moderate growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Millet Production in Ukraine

In value terms, millet production rose sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a moderate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 101% against the previous year. Millet production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of millet in Ukraine dropped notably to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -20.4% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, millet yield increased by +27.5% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 46%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then fell sharply in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of millet in Ukraine surged to X ha, increasing by 41% on the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 71%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the millet harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of millet, when their volume decreased by -59.2% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 125%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, millet exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 95% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Indonesia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of millet exports from Ukraine, with a combined 33% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +42.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Germany ($X) and Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest markets for millet exported from Ukraine worldwide, with a combined 32% share of total exports.

Indonesia, with a CAGR of +39.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average millet export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, millet export price increased by +19.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 61% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2022, purchases abroad of millet decreased by -90.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 236,832% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, millet imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 67,926%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) was the main supplier of millet to Ukraine, accounting for a approx. 99.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Poland stood at +13.6%.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of millet to Ukraine.

In 2022, the average millet import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -20.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 96%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Poland.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Kazakhstan amounted to +3.5% per year.
