Newsprint Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian newsprint market contracted significantly to $X in 2022, which is down by -53.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a abrupt contraction. From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Moldova amounted to -1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (-38.7% per year) and Slovakia (-37.6% per year).

In value terms, Moldova ($X) remains the key foreign market for newsprint exports from Ukraine, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 3.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Moldova was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (-37.0% per year) and Poland (-39.5% per year).

The average newsprint export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 1.9% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, newsprint export price increased by +32.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 46%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Newsprint Imports

Imports into Ukraine

For the tenth year in a row, Ukraine recorded decline in overseas purchases of newsprint, which decreased by -63.3% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a sharp descent. The smallest decline of -0.2% was in 2017. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, newsprint imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a dramatic slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of newsprint imports to Ukraine, with a combined 85% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovenia (with a CAGR of +142.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest newsprint suppliers to Ukraine were Russia ($X), Slovenia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 75% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Slovenia, with a CAGR of +123.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average newsprint import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
