In 2021, the Ukrainian dry peas market increased by 63% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

From 2017 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the average dry peas yield in Ukraine rose sharply to X tons per ha, with an increase of 5.6% against 2020 figures. Overall, the yield indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, dry peas yield decreased by -4.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 50%. The dry peas yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The dry peas harvested area in Ukraine rose modestly to X ha in 2021, increasing by 4% compared with 2020. Overall, the harvested area recorded slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 73% against the previous year. The dry peas harvested area peaked at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2021, overseas shipments of peas (dry) decreased by -11.4% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after five years of growth. In general, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dry peas exports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons) were the main destinations of dry peas exports from Ukraine, with a combined 41% share of total exports. Spain, Malaysia, Djibouti, the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Djibouti (with a CAGR of +75.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for dry peas exported from Ukraine were Turkey ($X), Italy ($X) and Pakistan ($X), with a combined 35% share of total exports. Malaysia, Djibouti, Sri Lanka, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

Among the main countries of destination, Djibouti, with a CAGR of +74.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average dry peas export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Africa (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, dry peas imports into Ukraine soared to X tons, picking up by 82% compared with 2020. Overall, imports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 219%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dry peas imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 167% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Kazakhstan (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main suppliers of dry peas imports to Ukraine, together accounting for 71% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +699.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest dry peas suppliers to Ukraine were Hungary ($X), Germany ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X), together comprising 57% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +776.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average dry peas import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -32.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
