In 2021, the Ukrainian persimmon market increased by 4.4% to $X, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption enjoyed a tangible increase. In 2021, the amount of persimmons exported from Ukraine reduced rapidly to X kg, waning by -51.8% against 2020. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 1,120% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X kg in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, persimmon exports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 691%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Georgia (X kg), China (X kg) and Panama (X kg) were the main destinations of persimmon exports from Ukraine, together accounting for 75% of total exports. Moreover, persimmon exports in Georgia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest exporter, China, twofold.

In 2021, the average persimmon export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 29% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, persimmon export price increased by +96.5% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 36%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Cyprus ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Panama ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+45.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, the amount of persimmons imported into Ukraine expanded significantly to X tons, growing by 5.3% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, persimmon imports expanded to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Azerbaijan (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of persimmon to Ukraine, accounting for a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, persimmon imports from Azerbaijan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Georgia (X tons), with a 5.2% share.

From 2014 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Azerbaijan amounted to +29.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+1.3% per year) and Georgia (+6.0% per year).

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X), Spain ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the largest persimmon suppliers to Ukraine, with a combined 88% share of total imports. Georgia, Uzbekistan and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +40.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average persimmon import price amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 26%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (-1.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
