Plastic Bag Market Size in Ukraine

In 2022, the Ukrainian plastic bag market increased by 12% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic bag production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of plastic sacks and bags decreased by -54.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports saw a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, plastic bag exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 35%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Poland (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) were the main destinations of plastic bag exports from Ukraine, with a combined 41% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +111.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Lithuania ($X) and Romania ($X) were the largest markets for plastic bag exported from Ukraine worldwide, together accounting for 43% of total exports.

Romania, with a CAGR of +116.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average plastic bag export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 13%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belarus (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

Plastic bag imports into Ukraine skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, increasing by 26% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced downturn. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic bag imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild reduction. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), Spain (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic bag imports to Ukraine, together comprising 50% of total imports. Canada, Israel, Turkey, Hungary, Romania, Germany, Argentina, Lithuania, Italy and Slovenia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovenia (with a CAGR of +77.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic bag suppliers to Ukraine were Poland ($X), Spain ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 46% of total imports. Hungary, Israel, Canada, Turkey, Romania, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Lithuania and Slovenia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

Among the main suppliers, Slovenia, with a CAGR of +81.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average plastic bag import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, plastic bag import price increased by +8.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
