In 2021, polystyrene in primary forms exports from Ukraine surged to X tons, rising by 253% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a precipitous slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 1,111% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, polystyrene in primary forms exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 811%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Moldova (X tons) was the main destination for polystyrene in primary forms exports from Ukraine, accounting for a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, polystyrene in primary forms exports to Moldova exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X kg), eightfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Moldova stood at -19.8%.

In value terms, Moldova ($X) remains the key foreign market for polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene) exports from Ukraine, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 3.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Moldova amounted to -17.5%.

The average polystyrene in primary forms export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, polystyrene in primary forms export price increased by +77.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 57% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene), when their volume increased by 30% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, polystyrene in primary forms imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Iran (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main suppliers of polystyrene in primary forms imports to Ukraine, together comprising 66% of total imports. Italy, Hungary, Russia, France and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +120.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Iran ($X), Belgium ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the largest polystyrene in primary forms suppliers to Ukraine, together accounting for 64% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Hungary, Russia, France and South Korea, which together accounted for a further 31%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Italy, with a CAGR of +114.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average polystyrene in primary forms import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight downturn. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+0.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
