Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+10.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2022, overseas purchases of polystyrene decreased by -43.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 18%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, polystyrene imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 88%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Turkey (X tons), China (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of polystyrene imports to Ukraine, together accounting for 61% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +80.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average polystyrene import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 26% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, polystyrene import price increased by +101.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from China ($X per ton) and Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
