Potato Market Size in Ukraine

In 2021, the Ukrainian potato market decreased by -4.4% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Potato consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Potato Production in Ukraine

In value terms, potato production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +55.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 65%. Potato production peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

The average yield of potatoes in Ukraine shrank to X tons per ha in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 11%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the average potato yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of potatoes production in Ukraine reduced to X ha, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 1.6%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to potato production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of potatoes, when their volume increased by 571% to X tons. Overall, exports recorded resilient growth. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a resilient increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons) was the main destination for potato exports from Ukraine, accounting for a 75% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to Belarus exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Azerbaijan (X tons), fourfold. Moldova (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Belarus stood at +34.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Azerbaijan (+59.5% per year) and Moldova (-12.3% per year).

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the key foreign market for potato exports from Ukraine, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Belarus totaled +34.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Azerbaijan (+60.0% per year) and Moldova (-3.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average potato export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -32.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 76%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Potato Imports

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of potatoes, when their volume decreased by -52.7% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 4,250%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, potato imports declined significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 1,477% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) were the main suppliers of potato imports to Ukraine, with a combined 49% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Latvia, Germany, Romania, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Egypt, Estonia, Azerbaijan and Austria, which together accounted for a further 47%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Latvia (with a CAGR of +1,269.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Ukraine, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Poland stood at +105.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+8.3% per year) and Germany (+17.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average potato import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 50% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+26.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
