In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Ukrainian market for refractory bricks, blocks and tiles, when its value decreased by -7.5% to $X. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, refractory bricks, blocks and tiles exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 94%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for refractory bricks, blocks and tiles exports from Ukraine, accounting for a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, refractory bricks, blocks and tiles exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), threefold. Belarus (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia amounted to -10.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+9.1% per year) and Belarus (+4.2% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for refractory bricks, blocks and tiles exports from Ukraine, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Russia stood at -13.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (-2.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (-9.5% per year).

In 2021, the average export price for refractory bricks, blocks and tiles amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uzbekistan (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, refractory bricks, blocks and tiles imports into Ukraine fell to X tons, reducing by -7% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, refractory bricks, blocks and tiles imports declined modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 81%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia (X tons), China (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main suppliers of refractory bricks, blocks and tiles imports to Ukraine, with a combined 63% share of total imports. Spain, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Lithuania and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Lithuania (with a CAGR of +146.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Russia ($X) and Austria ($X) appeared to be the largest refractory bricks, blocks and tiles suppliers to Ukraine, with a combined 50% share of total imports. Germany, Spain, Slovakia, Lithuania, Poland and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

Lithuania, with a CAGR of +145.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average import price for refractory bricks, blocks and tiles amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
