After five years of growth, the Ukrainian commercial refrigeration equipment market decreased by -4% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Commercial refrigeration equipment consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, commercial refrigeration equipment production rose markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2021, overseas shipments of refrigerating and freezing equipment and heat pumps (except household type equipment) were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 75%. The exports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, commercial refrigeration equipment exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland (X units) was the main destination for commercial refrigeration equipment exports from Ukraine, accounting for a 29% share of total exports. Moreover, commercial refrigeration equipment exports to Poland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovakia (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Uzbekistan (X units), with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Poland stood at +63.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (-9.9% per year) and Uzbekistan (+70.0% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the key foreign market for refrigerating and freezing equipment and heat pumps (except household type equipment) exports from Ukraine, comprising 29% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 9.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Poland amounted to +66.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (-2.6% per year) and Hungary (+77.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average commercial refrigeration equipment export price amounted to $X per unit, rising by 9.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Israel (+13.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, the amount of refrigerating and freezing equipment and heat pumps (except household type equipment) imported into Ukraine rose significantly to X units, picking up by 6.9% on 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, commercial refrigeration equipment imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Italy (X units), China (X units) and Russia (X units) were the main suppliers of commercial refrigeration equipment imports to Ukraine, with a combined 46% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Germany, Turkey, France, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Austria and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 43%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +26.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Russia ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the largest commercial refrigeration equipment suppliers to Ukraine, with a combined 44% share of total imports. Turkey, Lithuania, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, Germany, France and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

Slovakia, with a CAGR of +34.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average commercial refrigeration equipment import price amounted to $X per unit, growing by 12% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 12%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per unit), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
