Sorghum Market Size in Ukraine

Sorghum Production in Ukraine

The average yield of sorghum in Ukraine amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 5.2% against the year before. Over the period under review, the yield posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the yield increased by 80%. Over the period under review, the average sorghum yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The sorghum harvested area in Ukraine rose markedly to X ha in 2022, with an increase of 6.6% compared with 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, faced a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 39% against the previous year. The sorghum harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Sorghum Exports
Exports from Ukraine
In 2022, exports of sorghum from Ukraine surged to X tons, rising by 29% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sorghum exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Israel (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main destinations of sorghum exports from Ukraine, together comprising 53% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +29.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Israel ($X), Spain ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for sorghum exported from Ukraine worldwide, with a combined 52% share of total exports. Turkey, Italy, Iraq and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Turkey, with a CAGR of +24.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average sorghum export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Israel (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sorghum Imports
Imports into Ukraine
Sorghum imports into Ukraine dropped markedly to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -17.7% on the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 120%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sorghum imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a precipitous decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 104% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Moldova (X tons) constituted the largest sorghum supplier to Ukraine, with a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, sorghum imports from Moldova exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), sixfold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Moldova totaled +503.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-25.1% per year) and France (-22.3% per year).
In value terms, France ($X), the United States ($X) and Argentina ($X) appeared to be the largest sorghum suppliers to Ukraine, with a combined 95% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Moldova, which accounted for a further 4.2%.
Among the main suppliers, Moldova, with a CAGR of +246.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
The average sorghum import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -78.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 31% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
