Soya Bean Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian soya bean market soared to $X in 2021, picking up by 87% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed buoyant growth. Soya bean consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Soya Bean Production in Ukraine

In value terms, soya bean production rose remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of soya beans in Ukraine rose markedly to X tons per ha in 2021, with an increase of 6.4% compared with the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 31%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the average soya bean yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of soya beans production in Ukraine expanded markedly to X ha, growing by 9.1% on the previous year. Overall, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to soya bean production reached the maximum at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2021, the amount of soya beans exported from Ukraine contracted markedly to X tons, shrinking by -36% compared with 2020. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 61%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, soya bean exports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of soya bean exports from Ukraine, with a combined 58% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, Egypt, Spain, Germany, China, Greece, Israel and Hungary, which together accounted for a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +103.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for soya bean exported from Ukraine were Turkey ($X), Belarus ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 58% of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, Germany, Egypt, China, Spain, Greece, Hungary and Israel, which together accounted for a further 32%.

Among the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +108.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average soya bean export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 41% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, soya bean export price increased by +68.3% against 2019 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

Soya bean imports into Ukraine shrank sharply to X tons in 2021, which is down by -94.3% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 548%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, soya bean imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 244%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Canada (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of soya bean imports to Ukraine, together accounting for 73% of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Austria, the United States, Romania and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +376.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest soya bean suppliers to Ukraine were Canada ($X), France ($X) and Belarus ($X), together comprising 70% of total imports. Austria, Poland, the United States, Romania and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +337.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average soya bean import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 206% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
