The Ukrainian sparkling wine market fell remarkably to $X in 2022, which is down by -17.4% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, approx. X litres of sparkling wine were exported from Ukraine; waning by -51.6% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 64% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sparkling wine exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany (X litres), Denmark (X litres) and the United States (X litres) were the main destinations of sparkling wine exports from Ukraine, with a combined 53% share of total exports. Kazakhstan, Israel, Taiwan (Chinese), Kenya and Georgia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kenya (with a CAGR of +213.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for sparkling wine exports from Ukraine, comprising 24% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany amounted to -12.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+13.2% per year) and Denmark (+27.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sparkling wine export price amounted to $X per litre, with a decrease of -6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 40%. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Kazakhstan ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of sparkling wine decreased by -42% to X litres for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X litres, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, sparkling wine imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed pronounced growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 45%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X litres) constituted the largest sparkling wine supplier to Ukraine, with a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, sparkling wine imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X litres), threefold. Georgia (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy stood at +8.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+32.3% per year) and Georgia (-8.7% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sparkling wine to Ukraine, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy totaled +8.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-2.4% per year) and Spain (+27.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sparkling wine import price amounted to $X per litre, falling by -7.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 8.9%. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while the price for Moldova ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
