The Ukrainian pasta and couscous market surged to $X in 2022, growing by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. In 2022, shipments abroad of stuffed pasta and couscous decreased by -54.7% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, exports recorded a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, pasta and couscous exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Germany (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the main destinations of pasta and couscous exports from Ukraine, with a combined 46% share of total exports. Poland, the UK, Latvia, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Belarus, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Spain and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of +148.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for pasta and couscous exported from Ukraine were Germany ($X), Romania ($X) and Moldova ($X), together comprising 44% of total exports. The UK, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Belarus, Hungary, Spain, the Czech Republic and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.

In 2022, the average pasta and couscous export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pasta And Couscous Imports

Imports into Ukraine

After six years of growth, overseas purchases of stuffed pasta and couscous decreased by -4.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 110% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, pasta and couscous imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 99% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Turkey (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of pasta and couscous imports to Ukraine, with a combined 74% share of total imports. Greece, Lithuania, Vietnam, Tunisia and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Greece (with a CAGR of +220.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pasta and couscous suppliers to Ukraine were Turkey ($X), Italy ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports. Lithuania, Vietnam, Greece, Tunisia and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

Among the main suppliers, Greece, with a CAGR of +269.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average pasta and couscous import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+17.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
