Overall, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +69.1% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

China (X tons) was the main destination for sunflower oilcake exports from Ukraine, accounting for a 46% share of total exports. Moreover, sunflower oilcake exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X tons), with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to China amounted to +191.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (-14.7% per year) and France (-6.3% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for sunflower oilcake exports from Ukraine, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China stood at +202.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (-7.1% per year) and France (-3.1% per year).

In 2021, the average sunflower oilcake export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 38% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sunflower oilcake export price increased by +80.4% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices to Belarus ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+8.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, purchases abroad of sunflower oilcake decreased by -1.7% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 671%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sunflower oilcake imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 698%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Belarus (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sunflower oilcake to Ukraine, accounting for a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, sunflower oilcake imports from Belarus exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belarus amounted to +2.6%.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sunflower oilcake to Ukraine, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 26% share of total imports.
