In general, total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -37.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sunflower-seed and safflower oil exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +27.5% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

India (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of sunflower-seed and safflower oil exports from Ukraine, with a combined 37% share of total exports. Romania, China, the Netherlands, Italy, Bulgaria, Spain, Iraq, France, Malaysia and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 47%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Iraq (with a CAGR of +176.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for sunflower-seed and safflower oil exported from Ukraine were India ($X), Turkey ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 35% share of total exports. The average sunflower-seed and safflower oil export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sunflower-seed and safflower oil export price increased by +82.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 58% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Hungary ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) and Bulgaria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sunflower-seed and safflower oil imports into Ukraine surged to X tons in 2022, jumping by 6,106% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sunflower-seed and safflower oil imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Moldova (X tons) constituted the largest sunflower-seed and safflower oil supplier to Ukraine, with a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, sunflower-seed and safflower oil imports from Moldova exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Lithuania (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Switzerland (X tons), with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Moldova was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (+24.2% per year) and Switzerland (+279.4% per year).

In value terms, Moldova ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sunflower-seed and safflower oil to Ukraine, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lithuania ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Moldova was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (+43.0% per year) and Switzerland (+130.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average sunflower-seed and safflower oil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 78% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while the price for Switzerland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+21.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
