Tomato Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian tomato market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, the total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -17.4% against 2018 indices. Tomato consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Tomato Production in Ukraine

In value terms, tomato production expanded markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -23.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 37%. Tomato production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the average yield of tomatoes in Ukraine totaled X tons per ha, standing approx. at the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the average tomato yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of tomatoes production in Ukraine reduced slightly to X ha, approximately mirroring 2020. Over the period under review, the harvested area continues to indicate a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 2.7%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to tomato production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Tomato Exports

Exports from Ukraine

In 2021, the amount of tomatoes exported from Ukraine declined significantly to X tons, which is down by -48% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports faced a sharp curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 63%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tomato exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of tomato exports from Ukraine, together comprising 86% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Poland (with a CAGR of +178.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Belarus ($X) and Moldova ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for tomato exported from Ukraine worldwide, with a combined 84% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Poland, with a CAGR of +182.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average tomato export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw resilient growth. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+21.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Tomato Imports

Imports into Ukraine

For the fourth consecutive year, Ukraine recorded growth in overseas purchases of tomatoes, which increased by 17% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 117%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, tomato imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) was the main supplier of tomato to Ukraine, with a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, tomato imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), more than tenfold. Azerbaijan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey stood at +11.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+6.4% per year) and Azerbaijan (+357.7% per year).

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tomato to Ukraine, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 5.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Turkey amounted to +1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+3.7% per year) and Belarus (+143.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average tomato import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -30.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 29%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+13.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
