In value terms, urea exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a dramatic descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 269%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Romania (X tons) was the main destination for urea exports from Ukraine, with a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, urea exports to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), sixfold. Hungary (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Romania amounted to +15.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-28.9% per year) and Hungary (+1.7% per year).
In value terms, Romania ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for urea exports from Ukraine, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with an 8.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Romania amounted to +15.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-24.3% per year) and Hungary (+9.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average urea export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a slight increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 78% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Urea Imports
Imports into Ukraine
In 2022, the amount of urea imported into Ukraine plummeted to X tons, which is down by -37.1% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 293%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, urea imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 644%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Turkmenistan (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of urea imports to Ukraine, together comprising 65% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +251.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkmenistan ($X), Belarus ($X) and Egypt ($X) appeared to be the largest urea suppliers to Ukraine, with a combined 73% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Belarus, with a CAGR of +285.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average urea import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 54% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 89% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+45.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
